Non-Maxwellian electron distributions in clusters of galaxies

چکیده
Context. Thermal X-ray spectra of clusters of galaxies and other sources are commonly calculated assuming Maxwellian electron distributions. There are situations where this approximation is not valid, for instance near interfaces of hot and cold gas and near shocks. Aims. The presence of non-thermal electrons affects the X-ray spectrum. To study the role of these electrons in clusters and other environments, an efficient algorithm to calculate the X-ray spectra is needed. Methods. We approximate an arbitrary electron distribution by the sum of Maxwellian components. The decomposition is done using either a genetic algorithm or an analytical approximation. The X-ray spectrum is then evaluated using a linear combination of those Maxwellian components. Results. Our method is fast and leads to an accurate evaluation of the spectrum. The use of Maxwellian components allows to use the standard collisional rates that are available in plasma codes such as SPEX. We give an example of a spectrum for the supra-thermal electron distribution behind a shock in a cluster of galaxies. The relative intensities of the satellite lines in such a spectrum are sensitive to the presence of the supra-thermal electrons. These lines can only be investigated with high spectral resolution. We show that the instruments on future missions like Astro-H and IXO will be able to demonstrate the presence or absence of these supra-thermal electrons.

Numerical Modeling of Non-equilibrium Plasma Discharge of Hydrogenated Silicon Nitride (SiH4/NH3/H2)
In this work, we model a radiofrequency discharge of hydrogenated silicon nitride in a capacitive coupled plasma reactor using Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian electron energy distribution function. The purpose is to investigate whether there is a real advantage and a significant contribution using non-Maxwellian electron energy distribution function rather than Maxwellian one for determining the ...
متن کاملThe Motions of Clusters and Groups of Galaxies
The distributions of peculiar velocities of rich clusters and of groups of galaxies are investigated for different cosmological models and are compared with observations. Four cosmological models are studied: standard (Ω = 1) CDM, low-density CDM, HDM (Ω = 1), and PBI. We find that rich clusters of galaxies exhibit a Maxwellian distribution of peculiar velocities in all models, as expected from...
متن کاملUse of Langmuir probes in non-Maxwellian space plasmas
Disturbance of the Maxwellian plasma may occur in the vicinity of a spacecraft due to photoemission, interactions between the spacecraft and thermospheric gases, or electron emissions from other devices on the spacecraft. Significant non-Maxwellian plasma distributions may also occur in nature as a mixture of ionospheric and magnetospheric plasmas or secondaries produced by photoionization in t...
متن کاملAn analysis of electron distributions in galaxy clusters by means of the flux ratio of iron lines FeXXV and XXVI
Aims. The interpretation of hard X-ray emission from galaxy clusters is still ambiguous and different models proposed can be probed using various observational methods. Here we explore a new method based on Fe line observations. Methods. Spectral line emissivities have usually been calculated for a Maxwellian electron distribution. In this paper a generalized approach to calculate the iron line...
متن کامل2.C Effects of Non-Maxwellian Electron Populations in Non-LTE Simulations of Laser-Plasma Thermal Transport and Implosion Experiments
Spectrally and spatially resolved x rays are widely used diagnostics for high-temperature plasmas in laser-driven experiments. The relatively small time scales and small optical depths that occur often require a non-LTE (local thermodynamic equilibrium) analysis of atomic phenomena, and the relatively long mean free path of the most energetic electrons can make non-Maxwellian electron energy di...
